What is Pilates?

The Pilates method of movement was originally called ‘Contrology’ as it was about the control and endurance of the entire body. It was founded by German-born Joseph Pilates in the early 1900s.

He believed that mental and physical health were interconnected and should be conditioned together to work the body to its full potential.

He based his practice on 3 principles:

🔸Breath

🔸Whole-body health

🔸Whole-body commitment

It was originally used to help prisoners and hospitalised patients who were sick and injured to recover and regain physical and mental strength. It was originally designed for men, however nowadays there are many more women taking part.

Pilates improves flexibility, builds muscular strength and improves overall postural alignment and balance.

“It is the mind itself which builds the body”- Joseph Pilates
